High altitude breathing has been going on for years. Most people have heard about elite athletes traveling to the mountains to practice their sport, particularly track and field. Sometimes you’ll hear about football players or cyclists trying to do it. They’re trying to build up red blood cells to carry more oxygen to their tissues when they get back to their own hometown elevation. What they’re really doing is training their body to be used to a new level of carbon dioxide, which is what you need to do so the red blood cells release the oxygen.
